Our bodies have a way of signaling us whenever we are not consuming the right amount of necessary nutrients. Like other significant nutrients, protein plays a considerable role in our diets. One of its main functions includes building and repairing tissues that are crucial in building our bones and muscles.  It also has other fundamental roles such as strengthening our immune system and making hemoglobin that carries oxygen around our body.

In fact, it is needed in making enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. Essentially, It is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. It’s critical to note however that unlike carbohydrate and fat, your body does not store protein, so it has no reservoir to draw from when you’re running low—hence you’ll need large amounts of it t stay healthy.

Protein aids the body in repairing damaged tissues. As the National Institute of Health points out, deficiency in protein has been shown to contribute to poor healing rates. When your body doesn’t get enough of this essential element, it has a difficult time forming collagen. As noted by Nutritionist Cassandra Barns: “Healing is another vital function of protein. If you’re taking longer than expected to heal from an injury – whether it’s a cut, a bruise, a sprain, or something more serious – then lack of protein could be a reason.”

Also,  hair loss which is experienced by all persons of all age groups can at times be frustrating. Naturally everyone loves healthy, thick hair, however, with the lack of protein in our diets, this may be hard to maintain and achieve for some persons.

It is said that proteins are the ‘building blocks of the body’ hence our muscles, arteries, fingernails, heart, brain, liver, and kidneys are all built of tissue that comes from protein. The hair on our head is made up almost exclusively of a protein called keratin – so naturally, if you’re suffering from a protein deficiency, you might start to see changes to your crowning glory.

Being trapped with a runny nose and sore throat can be really annoying for some persons especially when they have a busy life. One of the reasons a person may have a weak immune system may be because they are not consuming enough protein in their daily diets. A study published in Progress of Food and Nutrition Science concluded that being deficient in protein results in the loss of T cells, important germ fighters. As a result, the immune system can’t ward off bacteria or viruses as well.

Eating enough protein is especially important on a diet because it helps ensure that you lose fat. High-protein foods take more work to digest, metabolize, and use, which means you burn more calories processing them. They also take longer to leave your stomach, so you feel full sooner and for a longer amount of time. Research in the journal Nutrition Metabolism found that dieters who boosted their protein intake to 30 percent of their total calories ate nearly 450 fewer calories each day and lost 11 pounds over a three-month period, Women’s Health reported.
